Aveling Barford 624 of 1938, formerly with Coventry Corporation, Dick has owned her for over 50 years now and she has been a regular feature of rallies and the Midlands steam scene throughout my entire life.

Some video of the Aveling Barford returning to the yard after attending the same event, shot by myself a couple of years ago;

Good to see my old Aveling No.10707. I bought this roller from Jack Wakefield in 1980 and named it Pegasus. I sold it to Peter Thompson in 1983 (the reg. no. PT1585 matched his initials) and this is the first year I have heard of it been out since then, it looks well.

Here is a photo I took of 'Pegasus' many years ago. I'm sure it was taken at a rally organised by the Buxworth Steam Group, in the early 80s and held at Stoneleigh Abbey. It is an event I remember due to the very low number of engines present - a couple of dozen 'expected' and in reality about half a dozen actually there. Still, I got a good picture of Pegasus - it looks the same now...
I know the people who have recently worked on the roller and put it back on the road. They have all worked hard and hopefully feel a sense of achievement at seeing the machine in steam again. The roller had major boiler work, undertaken by the original Israel Newton company, which included a new firebox and barrel. It is the neatest boiler work I have ever seen, it is very good indeed. The roller was put back together and other than trial steamings, for various reasons, it was parked in an open sided barn and never went out. It has been worked on over the last six months or so and Banbury was the first event it attended, followed by Birdingbury. Michael |

I remember that do at Stoneleigh Abbey, I have some very poor prints somewhere...the day I went wasn't as good as yours though. I think Dad had to inspect the food outlets etc so took me and left me to wander. It didn't take me long. Peter Wood's Marshall was there, Repulse and Sprig, I don't recall many others, you are right.

I can't remember Sprig being there but 'Lady Betty' - the black Fowler Showmans with no brasswork was there... I'll look for a photo later and post it, if my filing system works! Michael |
