Well on the way to work on Thursday there was a Water board van and two artic tankers, filling from the hydrant, and what were they using? A Stand Pipe, I had a look and it was a 2.5" one, or what ever they are, and it had no check valves in it. Haha

Do they not need check valves?

Dave, keep a beady eye on e-bay, I've just bought 70 foot of hose with brass ends for a tenner. Off an engine man too!
