Default Bygone Rally, Bressingham 29th September

This years Bygone Day at Bressingham will feature the products of Elijah Youngs, a small engineering firm from Diss in Norfolk. As well as horse ploughs, hand turned chaff cutters and other useful farming tools, they produced Thrashing drums and 16 Portable Steam Engines. The sole surviving Youngs portable will be in steam (albeit on reduced pressure, it is in need of a firebox and front tube plate) as well as a thrasher and other Youngs products. Four great grand children of Elijah and coming from all around the globe to be present.

I have managed to get the only known copy of a Youngs sales catalogue reprinted, with the intention of selling them to provide funds towards the cost of the new firebox for the portable engine. Cost is £15 each. 50 plus pages of fascinating products by this little known local firm, which includes cast iron Church heaters among its wide range.

Forecast does not look brilliant, but hoping for some sunny periods between the showers...

Excellent stuff, Jonathan.
Bressingham's resident Burrell roller "Buster" will also be in steam, as well as their beam engine. The majority if not all of their railway locos across four different gauges will be in steam too. Should be a good do.
I look forward to seeing the Youngs portable again. Is this the engine that has a clever governor that varies the cut-off rather than the steam supply to the valve chest? Very neat.
TTFN,

Thanks Kevin.

Yes the Youngs Portable has a Hartnell type Expansion Governor. Its very lively on the belt, despite only running at 70 psi. Turners of Ipswich were the agents for these governors "Cannot be equalled"

See you there

The turner portable no981 at stowmarket museum is equipped with the same governor
The late jack Blake who used it in its working day always reckoned it was the most economic engine he ever had
