he he he. The good old days of cheques..... they are still going somehow... just
My worry is if I start messing with the spindle and gears it will be more like £300+ because I will want to change the bearings which are white metal which no longer exist and then I would need to buy the bronze bearings instead which then will eat the soft spindle so I will need to buy the hardened spindle. If I can get used gears I will feel much better about it. |

I helped a friend re do his Myford headstock.
There should be packing pieces between the 2 halves of the bearings. These are made of numerous layers of shim and you just peal off one to tighten things up. Recheck with bearing blue and scrape the high spots if you want perfect. They need to do a power of work to go beyong repair. I would go the new gear as well. I would be pissed if I fitted a used one only to see it break from age. |

A fair point Stephan but I am planning a rebuild at a later stage but at the moment I just want to get on with a few practices.
I have removed the headstock (and spindle) and there is no shims so would that mean the bearings are in need of replacing? |
