No I'm not a "friend", just a old boat nutter.

The same event had lots of old diesel boats

but only one steamer.

Maybe have my old boat there next year.

My brother and I have bought an ex BWB tug which needs some major work, after which we'll instal a 1930s Gleniffer diesel engine which we're also restoring.

A question for you 'boat people'. In the days when I used to run school cruises, when we did the Cheshire ring, we used to pass 'Chocolate' Charlie Atkins when he lived in his old working boat at Preston Brook. Can't for the life of me remember the name of his boat - too lazy to look it up!

Courtesy of my non-relative Pete Harrison, Charlie's boat was Mendip. An exFellows, Morton and Clayton Ltd. motor boat, now an exhibit at Ellesmere Port Boat Museum.

FMC were one of the original canal transport companies in the 19th century.

My parents used to moor their boat at Preston Brook. Chocolate Charlie would always stick his head out when we passed. I think more to see if my parents ex. Thos. Clayton butty "Erne" was still afloat! Young Charlie Atkins used to be up at Middlewich and looked after the Ferrett which is now also at Elesmere Port. Another well known working boat family the "Tolley's" used to live just after the southern portal of Barnton tunnell by the what was then Red Lion pub. Sadly almost all of the old working boat people have now passed on. What is worse is that so much of their knowledge and experiences has either gone unrecorded or corrupted by canal folk lore leaving a rather distorted picture of life working on the boats.

I was at the 1972 IWA rally at Lymn with mum and dad. I was one!

It was the only IWA rally my parents ever attended. They swore that thay would never go to another again and were true to their word.

I always laugh that they give out prizes at a national canal rally for "best cake" and "best illuminated boat". Perhaps the NTET could give out a best cake prize?
