Default Pioneer Engineers Rushville Indiana 2014

Pioneer Engineers Club of Rushville, IN-July 31-August 3, 2014

Some will notice that some of the engines in these photos have appeared before in my pictures of other rallies and from last year. The expense of hauling these engines the long distances of the United States has the adverse effect of keeping that engine within a geographical radius of about 200 miles from home, so you tend to see the same engines from year to year.

The pioneer engineers always host two themes every year, a steam traction engine brand and a brand of tractor. This year they hosted Gaar-Scott traction engines and Massey tractors.

The club reused some hand hewn timbers to make a blacksmith shop, but it's so new they haven't had time to get it dirty yet.

Hi kevin,

Thanks for the great set of pics !

Probably a dumb question, does most o f the case engines have superheaters, hence the looong smokebox ?

Cheers chris

No superheaters on the Case engines. All the newer Case engines have the longer boilers for longer tubes and the extra heating area. The smoke boxes on most US engines are similarly long. The Feed water heater on the outside is standard on all Case engines. The Baker Co did offer a aftermarket super heater that could fit in the smoke box of most engines.

I've read that the long smoke box was designed to discourage larger sparks from going up the stack.

There were no Port Huron engines at Rushville this year. I do have some pictures of Tom Runty's engine from another rally from last year I can post if you like.

Kevin I've always thought that as well but never have seen any real documentation. As to the absence of Port Huron engines in the lower Midwest, While they were very popular in the upper Midwest of the country they seldom were sold very far south, more of a regional thing at the time. Some have ventured further south in recent times but most of those are sidelined due to the need to get major boiler renovation.

That's what I like about you boys out in the States, when it comes to wood sawing you don't mess about. Lovely set of tackle and you're not frightened to use it.
