Hollycombe Steam Rally 2024

I have always felt that Portable Engines are the poor relations of road steam, but equally I have always been fascinated by them since we stumbled on a real working example in a rice mill in Burma in the 'noughties'. There were actually many more working but these were no longer intact as operationally it was easier to separate the engine and its boiler. (When if ever did you last see a working (non-preserved) portable engine?

So last year we made the long journey to Bressingham for their 'portables event' and over the weekend it was a 'no brainer' to go to Hollycombe.

Sunday was a gloriously sunny day and one to remember.

There was too much working to spend time checking out all the resident engines, most of which seem to have vanished into secure covered accommodation which is the best place for them for the time being. Hollycombe's unique selling point is the steam fairground and hopefully the event will have raised significant money for that side, there were certainly a lot of people present .

Must admit Hollycombe seems to be getting better and better and this is where the money is coming from, lets hope it continues to flow :-)
