In photos 5 and 16, you can see that the free end of the cable is attached to the wheel hub in some fashion with a bow shackle - do you have nay more or closer photos of this as I have never seen that before.

It's just an eyebolt through the hub of the wheel, and something to allow the rope to rotate (or more accurately, not rotate) when the wheel turns.

If I have done this right there should be a closer picture attached, the swivel shackle is a proper Fowler one from Mike Goodman a must for any plougher tool kit. Also added a picture of Victory mole draining in the 40s and then in 2021

The photo taken in the 1940's is absolutely wonderful - loads of atmosphere and mood, it really stirs the emotions. Thanks for posting it here on T-T.
