Foster Showman’s Road Locomotive - Victorious, 7 NHP, Built 1920, Works No. 14501, Reg. No. MD 983. New to T. Pettigrove of Middlesex to work with the family’s Tidman Gallopers. It travelled extensively around the London area before World War II and then was laid up briefly before being used for forestry work. Subsequently the engine was found to be too heavy for this job and stood at Princes Risborough until purchased by Paul Fowler in 1985, when it was completely stripped and overhauled. Fowler Showman’s Tractor “D.C.Ver”

Garrett 4CD Showman’s Tractor - Little Billy,
4 NHP, Built 1919, Works No. 33566, Reg. No. AD 9069.
Built to the order of M. B. Browning of Stonehouse, Glos, as a contractors engine. It was supplied via Garrett's agents Workman Bros. of Slimbridge, priced £1027. It was purchased in 1920 from Mr Browning by amusement caterers W. Cole & Sons of Bristol, along with Garrett 4CD No.33486. Both were converted to showman’s tractors and named Little Billy and Little Jim after Mr Cole's grandsons. They went to work in the fairground and stayed in the family until 1972. Little Billy provided power for the Gondolas ride which is now preserved in the Thursford Collection in Norfolk. Purchased by present owners in 1992.

Road Locomotives

Fowler A4 Road Locomotive - Kitchener, 6 NHP, Built 1902, Works No. 9279, Reg. No. SY
1125. Built for J. Brennand of Thirsk, the engine passed through several owners in its working life
including the renowned N. E. Box. Purchased by the present owner in 1994 and completely
restored. Owned by M. Frampton from St. Albans, Herts

Steam Tractors

Fowler T3 Steam Tractor “Mr Blower”
Built 1918, Works No. 15288, Reg. No. U 4952,
New to F. Cooke of Spalding, Lincs before moving to G. Barnsdale & Son of
Donnington, who used it for timber haulage and later for driving machinery. Put aside
for scrap in 1940 but luckily remained intact at Grantham scrap yard until 1967.
Purchased by the present owner in 1996 and completely overhauled.

Fowler T3 Tractor “Mtoto”

Garrett 4CD Tractor - Victoria, 4 NHP, Built 1924, Works No. 34461, Reg. No. PM 4795
This engine was supplied new in Royal Show Finish, and didn’t leave Garrett’s works until 1927. It was supplied to W & F Bains of Blackham, Sussex at a cost of £805. It moved in 1944 to Chris Lambert at Horsmondon, Sussex who converted the engine to a road roller. In 1951 Don Eastwood purchased the engine at the Lambert sale for £155, still in road roller form. In 1957 he converted her back to a tractor. The engine remained in the Eastwood family for nearly 50 years, last being steamed in 1994. Purchased by the present owner in 2004 and has undergone a major rebuild including a new firebox, barrel, tender, diff gears and canopy. She has been finished off in her original show livery. This is the engine’s first outing since it’s a rebuild and its first time at Belvoir.

Built 1911, Works No. 44103, Reg. No. AL 9348, Owned by M. Beeby
New from the Royal Show to Gripwells of Notts. Purchased by the present owners
family in 1932 for general agricultural work.

Foster “Sprig”
Owned by John Bosworth

Marshall Traction Engine – Mary Margaret, 8 NHP, Built 1889, Works No. 17134, Reg. No. PY 298. New to the Royal Show at Windsor and then returned to the works to have a normal slide valve fitted have originally been fitted with a prototype valve. Sold to T. Barley of Rainton for threshing, and was overhauled for him in 1936 at a cost of over £300. Sold at Barleys sale in 1945 and used until it was replaced by a tractor. Saved for preservation in 1962 and after passing through several owners it was purchased by the present owner in 1996. Owned by M. Davison of County Durham

Marshall Traction Engine – Old Nick, 7 NHP, Built 1908, Works No. 49725, Reg. No. BW 4509. The engine started its life in Oxfordshire in the ownership of the Oxford Steam Plough Co. where it worked until 1940. Bought at auction by the Pennock family of North Yorkshire and used for woodsawing. Rescued for restoration in 1960 by T. Meadowcroft who named the engine after a son. Purchased by the present owners in 1984 from J. Ockington. Over the last two years this engine has had extensive boilerwork carried out including a new tubeplate, smokebox and chimney base. This year “Old Nick” is back in steam for its 100th Birthday.

Marshall Traction Engine, 7 NHP, Built 1923, Works No. 76751, Reg. No. BT 6447. Supplied new to George Harness, a Threshing Contractor in Yorkshire, before moving in the early 1940’s to Mr. T. Swain of Boston, Lincs where it was used for contract work including threshing, sawing and forestry work. Purchased in 1960 for £100 by Mr. J. Dawson from Swains Yard, following its last job winching on a riverbank. Its first rally was at Skegness that year. Purchased by the present owner’s father, P.C. Bath in 1966 and rebuilt by Eastern Boilerworks of Saffron Walden. Rubber tyres fitted to the rear wheels over the 2004/5 winter to improve the ride for the engine and crew.

Ransomes, Sims & Jefferies Agricultural Engine “Sybil”
Built 1906, Works No. 18504, Reg. No. NO 6925
New in August 1906, “Sybil” spent all of her life with threshing contractors in Essex.
Purchased by the present owner in 1988 and has undergone extensive repairs including
new firebox, boiler barrel and tender. This engine will travel to Belvoir for its 2nd visit under her own steam. Owned and driven by Vaughan Wray of Twyford, Melton Mowbray, Leics

Ransomes, Sims and Jefferies Light Agricultural Locomotive, 7 NHP, Built 1924, Works No. 36020, Reg. No. BS 9010. New to Sena Sugar Estates Ltd in Mozambique, and used for general haulage and timber work. The engine was rescued for preservation by Peter Court and returned to this country. Purchased in a derelict state by the present owner and completely rebuilt including the manufacture of new parts over a 5 year period.

Portable Engine

Tuxford Portable Engine, 2 NHP, Built C 1880, Works No. 1283.
This small engine was saved for preservation by the late Ronald Clark in 1947. The exact date of manufacture is unknown but this style of engine was built at Tuxford’s Surbeck Ironworks in Boston from 1859 – 1886. The paintwork is copied from what is thought to be the original style and colours found under the blue paint it carried in preservation.

Steam Wagons

Foden J Type Flexible Six Wheeler Articulated Tractor,
Built 1930, Works No. 13536, Reg. No. RY 9259.
New to F. Richards of Leicester as a flexible six wheeler articulated vehicle. The following year the wagon had moved to Derbyshire with new owners. Completely rebuilt in preservation by H. Wakefield of County Durham, before being purchased by the present owners. The engine is under restoration with a trailer being built to accompany it.

I was just wondering whether the "showmans" line up is repreprentiative of most rallies as to the percentage of genuine showmans engines to con- (the operative word) versions

This is by no means a critism of belvior castle rally which is rightfully on of the premier events in the country, well organsed and in a superb setting to boot. - Well worth a visit if you have not been!

ill be there tommrow night, was planning on going over tonight but parents decided tomorow is fine, with me only being 15 ish miles away its not too much of a trek, the first time we did it we drove over both days and didnt stop over night, now we stot everyear
