Welland Steam and Country Rally 2014

Here's a small selection of the full size engine featured at this years Welland Steam and Country Rally.

There was a great selection of engines on display including a few that are new to me. My personal thanks go to both the exhibitors and organisers for putting on yet another great show

For me this engine was one of the stars of the show, 1904 Fowler A4 "The Maid of Cefn Yddfa"
There was also Garrett No 36461, Boolavogu which was the last ever Garrett to be built

Here's a selection of some more engines in attendance which by no means should be a comprehensive guide.

And finally the Ross-on-Wyes steam engine society own 'Smith of Rodley' steam crane which looks great when in action

As per normal there's another couple of hundred photos taken at this years event and there featured on my site here. I do hope you enjoy taking a look at my photos and any feedback will be more than appreciated

If anyone would like a copy of an original image featured on my site that doesn't have the watermark please send me a PM and I'll be more than happy to oblige.

enjoyed our day down in Worcestershire, a fine line up of engines and red hot weather.

what on earth is that nonsense around the flywheel on 'Tiler'?

four-inch-samson 27th July 2014 09:33 PM

Special thanks due I think to everyone who put on such a great show in that heat (Saturday). Family and I enjoyed our visit as always. Roll on the next 50 years!

I had a go on this engine Saturday Evening in the ring. The owner only purchased the engine before Christmas, as well as having a fairly inexperienced crew. so has fitted the flywheel brake while he is getting used to the engine (this was his second rally with the engine) so if all goes really wrong he can use it. He hasn't had to use it yet! he will remove it after about a year.

' Standard ' Burrell flywheel brake , in unusual position because of the clack sited immediately ahead of the more normal position , so quite likely original. Late Burrells are full of these infelicities .

On a Foden?

The Pirate 28th July 2014 09:35 AM

I was going to comment that the crew on the Foden didn't look the most confident!!
I can see the cab stay looking a very funny shape should they use the brake in anger.

It's a foden? ;-) and the flywheel brake is usually foot operated on a foden is it not? 11208 is

First visit for me this year and what a cracking show .
Quite a few engines I came across I have not seen before which is what it's all about .
The working areas are interesting especially the steam crane working in the woodcutting area .
Great steam parade in a good size arena which like Elvaston is circular in shape allowing for a better viewing experience for the public thumbsup
It's a pity that there were no showmans engines parading on Saturday given the examples that could be found near the fairground .
Well organised event that I will be returning to .

Fair bit to clean off yourself after your exploits on the "Magic Carpet" I should think:D

SussexSteamFan 29th July 2014 07:42 PM

A few of my favourite pics from the show, spent more time playing than photographing but had a brilliant time! We had 'End2End' on the tractor pull, carpet surfing, on the dyno test and trundling round all weekend! Looked like it had been to Dorset by the time it had arrived home ;)

Well, looks like i will have to get up there next year! Not been before.

Engine John 30th July 2014 09:50 AM

I'm thinking the same Jim.

I have been looking for a big rally to travel to with the 6" rather than the Tasker since we stopped going to another about 3 years ago. I think this looks like it could suit perfectly.

I'll make enquiries!

Mr. Fettler 30th July 2014 03:03 PM

Actually looks like a 'proper' steam event like times gone by.
Count me in for next year, looks like a cracking show.

Well done to all those nameless people who made it happen.

Nick

Thats the first time I've seen A&P 10545 since it left us in '97 I think. Looks almost exactly the same. Good to see it out and about!

Her is a photo of my Ruston along side an exhibitors 6" version at Welland. Amazing how scale works. One does not look twice as large as the other!

That's exactly why I hate people describing 6" as "half size" when it isn't. The maths works out that the full size engine occupies 8 times as much space in terms of volume as the 6" model. I know full well that my 6" Burrell is nothing like half size.

Nice to see it illustrated with a photo though Colin.

Your engine is real credit to you. I'm looking forward to seeing it in the flesh.

Seems to have been plenty of contributions to this Welland thread so I haven't added any not that I didn't take any, and had a good time.

You don't need to sign up to facebook to see them in case you're worried...
