GP Engineering 6th May 2012 07:23 PM

Great pictures, i went on Saturday.

stevie61 6th May 2012 07:28 PM

Thanks , the weather was on our side wich helped!!

GP Engineering 6th May 2012 07:42 PM

I wish i had gone today as it was overcast and quite cold yesterday.

stevie61 6th May 2012 07:55 PM

Today looked the best forecast out of the three days and it turned out good. Really good to see the Aveling that was part of Thursford collection. Got their work cut out there...

Coal&Water 6th May 2012 08:01 PM

We popped in on Friday, but had to leave fairly quickly due to 2 grumpy toddlers. I wish I had gone today as lots more engines present that I have not seen before.

Matt S 7th May 2012 09:27 AM

Was there on Sat and Sun with my 'small' pile of crap...alongside Portable, living van and Wallis Roller. Cracking couple of days although could do without the sun burn this morning (I should have listened to 'Pride Of Somersets' warnings rather than laughing at them). Will certainly return next year with a bigger 'Pile of Crap'.

Met some nice people along the way as well.

Nice relaxing chilled out event by Ugly Harris and the team. Well done.

davidje 7th May 2012 09:36 AM

Had a nice weekend there too with the Wallis. Great to catch-up with people, and meet many more as well.

Charlie Harris 8th May 2012 05:46 PM

Fantastic photo's, thank you all. Just been back about an hour, absolutely shattered, a weeks holiday lighter, and a few more grey hairs, but it is thanks to stuff like this that makes it all worthwhile. Cheers. :)

00000 8th May 2012 07:20 PM

Thanks for all your effort Charlie, always a good atmosphere here.

Matt, it's piles of crap that make a rally more interesting!

Charlie Harris 8th May 2012 11:34 PM

I echo that. I had several favourable comments about that display, definately something to repeat.

davidje 9th May 2012 01:03 PM

Thanks for the photo's. As a slight diversion, what is the tall pointed structure seen in the first photo of the road run photo's used for for?

Charlie Harris 9th May 2012 01:36 PM

It has no purpose, it is a folly, built in the late 1800's I believe by unemployed local workers and paid for by the then landowner. There are several dotted about, all different. The one on the showfield is called the Rose Tower. Incidentally the landowner was a reknowned local character nicknamed Jack The Treacle Eater. Please don't ask why. haha.

Matt S 9th May 2012 04:21 PM

Please don't ask why. haha.

Why?

We had a conversation about the tower as well, but came up with no constructive answer, so when asked by two punters on Sunday afternoon the first was told it was for housing 'doves', and the second was informed it was a 'Scandinavion Pizza Oven' and that replicas could be found in Ikea, they seemed to go away happy enough.

Charlie, I havnt been right up to the tower as it was behind a fence, but I see a large oak tree was blown over , so is the tower 'dry walled', or cemented? If the former it must have been well done to last all this time!

Pride of Somerset 10th May 2012 04:42 PM

Charlie, another question - isn't one of the other follies in the park called 'Jack the Treacle Eater'?

The four follies are said to have been built to mark the four compass points at the limits of the park....... Messiter's Cone is also known as the Rose Tower.
