Bishops Castle 2010

(Not sure what's happened to the portrait pictures - I resized them to be 800 pixels on the long side but they have been resized in the upload process - Maybe David can sort them out if he sees this)

We went on Saturday and enjoyed the day enormously. I was introduced to Mr Lampwortroy via his tee shirt and met The Commentator in a churchyard! Small world.

Here is a sample of the engines and some people creating the atmoshphere that is special to that small town:

Alistair

Another wonderfull weekend at Bishops Castle, since the first rally there in 1970 (?) Father has always wanted to go up the hill on his engine. Today we did it twice, some 40 years later!. Bottom gear first, then in top.

Nephew drove an engine for the first time at Kemble, then a go on a tasker at Fairford. Now he has driven on the road. Fair play he is very good!.

Many thanks to you and your family for your hospitality, all the stewards and helpers who were smashing and a great help.

w6cloggs 19th September 2010 08:32 PM

I would also like to say thanks to all those who helped me over the weekend as well.

Steaming North 19th September 2010 09:15 PM

Just got back.

A massif thanks to Alistair, Claire and Co. for a brilliant weekend and allowing us to look after the roller - what a lovely machine it is to drive!

Also a big thanks for organising the weather to make Vicky say the words "it doesn't even have to be an expensive caravan, just as long as it's warm and dry"...no more looking at £18k caravans!

sawman 19th September 2010 09:38 PM

Again a most fantastic weekend. Alistair, Claire and all the other people that looked after us so well must be congratulated. This rally is one of the best and i must urge anyone that has not been to make a not in their diary for next year. Again thank you.

Bill and Anne-Marie

Alistair, Claire, Alex and Sam,

Just a quick thank you for your very generous hospitality, although we only visited, without engine we were made to feel very welcome. The Pork Pie was wonderful !

Only problem now is that William won't stop saying that he want's a showmans engine, first thing he did last night when we got home was open my latest copy of Steaming looking for one ! I think I shall ask him to chat his favorite Uncle up !

Thanks again

Just home from our mammoth tour which started on July 15th and took in steam events at Welland, Much Marcle, Kemble, GDSF & Bishops Castle.
I must say that Bishops Castle is by far the most enjoyable. Thanks to all who took part and who helped to make it a GREAT weekend. Pity the weather let it down a little.
Videos of the Saturday evening pub run to follow when I get them uploaded to YouTube.

Sorry to miss you on Sunday. I hope your wife is feeling better. I understand Shingles is an extremely painful condition. Get well soon Mrs Engine John.

Sorry, I did not know about it until later. I would have loved to see and hear your super engine on that hill as the top of the Saturday hill was superb!

lampwortroy 27th September 2010 05:44 PM

Our recordings of the hill climb on the Saturday pub run are now available on YouTube.
It was quite dark and the cameras had difficulty in keeping the engines in focus.

I have now got round to uploading more videos from this event. I was hampered by dull overcast weather and a gusty wind that had a marked effect on the sound quality in places. However here is my 2 penneth:-

The end of Saturdays parade at the entrance to the industrial estate which contains V8-Spider's Timberyard.

Finally some of the standard views in the display area.

After a lengthy discussion with "Celtic Steamer" and in in depth look at the deep firebox throat-plate and the huge deep firebox. Bearing in mind the area that the engine spent most of its working life, we are sure this is one of the few survivors of the engines built specifically to burn peat. Which could be the reason the its owner "Blackjack" says it is a very good steamer on coal. Then with the huge deep firebox and 12ft 6ins to the chimney top I am not surprised the fire draws well!
